Pennywort pond plant, does it have to be sticking out of the water?

My pond is 2 foot deep. It has no slopes or shelves. I have a pennywort plant and not sure if the leaves have to be out of the water or can it sit at the bottom?

There are dozens of types of pennywort. Some float on the water,some like to be rooted under water,some grow in marshy ground and some grow out of dry stone walls.....it's big problem is that it's so invasive. It'll cover the pond and no light will get underneath,and the oxygen exchange will be pretty bad too. If you're putting fish in the pond you won't see them for pennywort and they'll be gasping for air. You'll need to keep getting rid of it to keep some free water. There are conservation projects all over the country to get rid of the stuff from ponds and streams because it strangles everything else. Are you sure you want it? You could keep it in a pot raised on a pole stuck into the mud at the bottom if there is any,or on a frame,with the top of the pot level with the water or thereabouts. It would stop it spreading so much.

Most ponds are deep enough so that the water does not freeze all the way to the bottom of the pond. So plants below the ice layer (i.e. most of the plants) will not be in water that freezes.

I'm not quite sure about the "rotting" part of your question. It seems unrelated to the first part. But, excessive nutrient input into a pond can cause a process called eutrophication. This is basically excessive plant growth. The dying plant growth eventually sinks to the lower water layers where normally it would be broken down by lower organisms such as bacteria. Nevertheless, this breakdown of biological matter requires oxygen (O2). The lower layers are, of course, not in contact with the atmosphere so if there is excess organic matter down there the O2 can easily used up making these lower layers anaerobic. When this happens organic muck accumulates in the sediment and the depth of the lake can certainly decrease over time. This usually is associated with a significant decrease in water quality. So, in summary, excessive plant growth associated with nutrient loading prevents rotting of the plant material.

Koi fish are polluting my pond, any body please help me with some tips to maintain it.?

My pond is having leak proof bottom and up on it one layer(5 inches) of red mud and upon it a layer (2 inches) of sand. It is a circular shape (radius of 2 feet,and depth of 2 feet) and having a capacity of 500L/130 U S gallons. with in it 4 lotus plants and of around 20 mollies(fish), 3 koi and 2 white sharks. what i do is ones in every 10 days i change water manually.(take of 3/4 of water and refilling again). now i am planning to buy a BOYU submersible filter is it enough.

Koi get 2-3 feet long. Your pond is only 4 feet wide. No, the filter will not be enough.

You need to take out almost all of the fish. The koi and sharks have no business in there. The mollies should have brackish water and I can't imagine keeping them alive very long in an outdoor pond, even if it is warm where you are. They are small fish and will make quick snacks for any passing birds. All 3 of these fish are incompatible with each other.

Ins and outs of koi pond setup?

My dad is on a "let's make the yard pretty" kick, and a koi pond has weedled it's way into the picture. Problem is that we have NO idea of even where to start.

Go with a pond liner. They are easier to use and last longer, especially if you live in a climate with temperature extremes (the UV rays and freezing, etc., can damage the rigid plastic over time - EPDM liners rarely have that problem).

You will need to use an underlayment to keep the liner from getting punctured by tree roots and rocks and things. You can buy it, or use a thick (4"+) layer of sand, or, my personal favorite, carpet pad.

I personally think free-form shapes look better than perfect circles or rectangles, but that's up to you. You can experiment with the shape by laying your garden hose out in the approximate dimensions of your pond. You will probably err on the side of too small - I read something somewhere once that said most pond owners wish they would have made their pond larger within a year or two of putting one in (happened to me - we started with 500 gallons for our first one, then went up to 3,000 a year later!).

Once you're satisfied with the size and shape, dig your hole, put down your underlayment, and put the liner down on top. It helps to let it warm up in the sun first - the warmth makes it more pliable. Start filling it up with water (use culinary water - irrigation water has all kinds of bugs and critters in it that can ultimately cause sickness and injury to your fish). Smooth out the liner as it fills, trying to avoid as many folds, wrinkles, etc., as possible.

DO NOT USE A SUMP PUMP. They have the power to move water OK, but they are filled with oil. If you have a pump go out, or a seal crack, or whatever, your pond will be filled with oil, too, and it will kill everything - plants, fish, beneficial bacteria, etc. - you have. Splurge on a good filter system and a pump made for ponds. When in doubt as to size, type, etc., over-filtration is always best. Maintaining good water quality is the secret to maintaining healthy fish.

You can order koi over the internet - just "google" koi and you will find dozens of suppliers, of all sizes and colors. They can be expensive, however. Lots of garden centers and nurseries now carry koi, as well, and they can be higher quality than what you would find in a pet store but not exorbitantly priced like show koi via the internet. It's a good "medium" place to start.

I hope you guys enjoy your new koi pond. I love mine! Koi have so much more personality than goldfish, and are so much smarter - I would never go back to keeping goldfish after keeping koi for the last five years.

Is it possible to have a watergarden pump that is too powerful?

I have a watergarden that is around 800 gallons (11' x 6' x 1.5 appx). It seems the best pumps and filters use 2000 gph pump. Isn't this too much? I live in Florida and the pond easily gets 6 hours of sun. I'm new to this and the more I read, the more confused I get! I recently looked into a skimmer/filter system but now i'm looking at a waterfall/filter system, as it seems better. The pump I have is 535gph and it has a fountain attachment. I'm going to add fish eventually. And am I right that the pump just attaches to the waterfall with tubing?

Yes, the pump attaches to the waterfall with the tubing.

Theoretical, you will be able to pump all of the water through your pump every hour and a half. However, the diameter of the tubing will most likely REDUCE the amount of water that can actually be pumped. Also, if you have to pump the water UPHILL to get to the top of the waterfall and the further away the waterfall is, the less that will actually get pumped. Make sense?
