Designing your herb garden can be either a bit daunting or a lot of fun. You will have a lot of questions to consider: Where shall my garden go? What plants will I be able to grow? Which herbs do I use the most? Do I want a theme garden? Will it be a formal or informal garden? How much time do I have to care for it?
First of all, settle on a location. Rather than planting your herbs in the garden, look out your kitchen window and see if there's a suitable spot nearby to locate them. By finding a sunny spot near the kitchen door, you will have fast access to your culinary and tea herbs. Another option would be to plant these herbs in containers on a sunny patio.
Now, think about how much time you have to maintain the herb garden. This will help you decide the style and size of the garden. Generally, a lot of herbs can be grown in a small space, if the growing conditions are met. A six to eight foot square or round space will be plenty large, and remember, you can always expand it later. A formal garden will take much longer to design and plant than an informal garden. Think about the type of herbs you use most, and plan your garden around them.
Design a Formal Herb Garden
Formal herb gardens, often called knot gardens can be beautiful additions to your yard.A formal herb garden is generally geometric in shape, subdivided into symmetrical spaces. Low hedges of herbs or box with paths of brick or gravel separate the spaces. Each space usually contains one type of plant, or perhaps one color of plant. You could plant culinary herbs in one section, tea herbs in another, and so on. The overall shape could be circular, square, rectangular or diamond shaped. Many formal herb gardens have a central point of interest - a tree, a fountain, or a statue.
If you decide on a formal garden, plan it out carefully on graph paper. Give your design enough room for both plants and paths. Look in garden books for inspiration, and find patterns that please you. Decide upon the type of garden you would like - devoted to culinary herbs, fragrance herbs, or perhaps a few of each. Think about color, foliage shape, plant height and spread, and how your herbs will fit into the sections of your garden for best effect.
Informal Gardens
More frequently, herb gardens are very informal, with herbs sprawling and creeping naturally. They seem to have a pleasing mix of textures and foliage colors. Do pay some attention to planning as you plant. Learn how large each will grow, both height and spread. You don't want to allow tall herbs to shade or over-grow smaller ones, or to have sprawling oregano overtake your smaller herbs.
You can plant your informal herb garden as a themed garden - culinary, tea fragrance or medicinal herbs. Italian culinary herbs, health enhancing herbs or edible flowers and herbs could be your theme. If you live in a hot, dry location, perhaps a Mediterranean theme would work, with lavender, thyme, sage, rosemary and oregano your main herbs.
Another informal but attractive herb garden could be planted with low growing herbs as a rockery. Roman chamomile, dwarf oregano and sage, winter savory, prostrate rosemary, pennyroyal and thymes are good rock garden herbs. Use local rocks to form the basis of your rockery, dug into the ground so they look natural, and intersperse them with your herbs, and perhaps a few marigolds for color.
Your herb garden, whether formal or informal, will be an investment of time, imagination and money that will repay you for years to come. Take the time to research and plan it and have fun with it.

Biodegredable Plastics - Transgenic Plants Providing a Solution
BIODEGRADABLE PLASTICS
- TRANSGENIC PLANTS PROVIDING A SOLUTION
Almost every product we buy most of the food we eat and many of the liquids we drink come encased in plastic packaging, which provides excellent protection for the product. It is cheap to manufacture and seems to last forever. Lasting forever, however, is proving to be a major environmental problem. Plastics are manufactured from numerous non-renewable resources like natural gas, coal, and oil. Plastics cannot be degraded easily in the natural environment due to their long polymer molecules which are too large and too tightly bound.
A type of sturdy and hard plastic is made with a molecule known as Bisphenol A, BPA. BPA like many other man made chemicals is now detectable in most people’s blood streams and could cause dangerous hormonal changes in children. BPA may tend to cause cancer, early puberty, obesity and even attention deficit disorder.
To overcome this problem BIODEGRADABLE PLASTICS have been developed which are made from renewable resources, such as plants. Biodegradable plastics are made with plant-based materials and result in 15% less carbon emission. Infact biodegradable plastics have not been successful in replacing the wide spread use of traditional petrochemical plastics.
The following are few items and the time required for their decomposition,
Tin cans- 50 to 100 years
Aluminum Cans- 80 to 100 years
Glass Bottles- 1 million years
Newspapers- 25 to 50 years
Polystyrene- 1000's of years
Plastic bags- 400 years
So now we know the raising alarm being caused in the environment by the use of plastics. But a solution is always there,

The plastics that are decomposed in the natural environment are known as the “biodegradable plastics”. (‘Biodegradable’ means that a substance can naturally decompose with the help of micro organisms and will not persist in the environment beyond a certain period of time). The chemical bonds of biodegradable compounds are easily destroyed by a variety of bacteria over a small period of time to facilitate their decomposition. As early as in the year 1926, Lemoigne managed to isolate the first of the polyhydroxyalkanoates – polyhydroxybutyrate (a homopolymer whose building unit is the 3-hydroxybutyric acid) from the Bacillus megaterium bacterium. At the end of the 1950s, the presence of the polyhydroxybutyrate was confirmed as an energy and carbon source and storage in many other bacteria. Many species of bacteria accumulate polyhydroxyalkonoates as energy storage compounds, some of the PHA polymers are commercially valuable as biodegradable plastics.
Polyhyroxybutyrate is a PHA produced in Ralstonia eutropha via three enzyme bio synthetic pathway consisting of ? – ketothiolase, aceto acetyl Co-A reductase, and PHB synthase. PHB synthase production in plants was first demonstrated in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana. Polyhydroxy alkanoates (PHAs), e.g., polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), are synthesized from acetyl-CoA used as precursor, and are used for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics with thermoplastic properties. At present, PHAs are produced by bacterial fermentation, and the cost of biodegradable plastic is substantially higher than that of synthetic plastics.
Attempts are being made to produce PHAs in transgenic plants to reduce the cost. Genes encoding the two enzymes, aceto-acetyl-CoA reductase (PhbB) and PHB synthase (phbC), involved in the PHB synthesis from the precursor acetyl-CoA have been transferred from the bacterium Alcaligenes eutrophus and expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana. When the two enzymes were targeted into the plastids, PHB accumulated in leaves. PHB production by transgenic plants provides an example of a novel compound synthesized in plants.

The ASTM, CEN and DIN standards specify the criteria for biodegradation, disintegration and eco-toxicity for a plastic to be called compostable. While ISO 14855 makes no stipulations regarding disintegrations or toxins remaining.
Dealing with plastic wastes has taken on significance not far short of ultimate redemption. Developing biodegradable plastics is just one of the solutions to the existing problem. Its our responsibility to remember that by the uncontrolled use of plastics we are contributing our share to a deadly pollution whose ill effects are irreversible and capable of reaching out to numerous generation to come.

There is about a 1/4 inch of clay in the bottom and on the marginal shelves of my 300 gallon pond. I have not added fish or plants yet. The water is already murky but has only been in the pond for 3 days. Should I empty and refill before proceeding with living things or just let it sit for a few more days first?

One thing I've found with Hostas is make sure the crown is almost exposed to the elements, don't put very much soil ,or any mulch on the crown.They're very hardy can survive 40 below! They don't get their mature shape for a few years.

I made the mistake of planting mixed "perennial garden" and "daisy garden" seed packs in an area that I cleared out this winter. Most weeds (I think) I have been able to identify, and I am faithfully watering and caring for the remaining plants. However, there is one that I am afraid may be a weed, it's growing fairly large, right now it's about 15". The stem has narrow vertical 'ridges' on it , I counted five around. The leaves are fairly large, about 4-5". I scanned a leaf, how do I post a picture? If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it!

A weed is a plant that is growing someplace it is not wanted. Even that arch weed dandelion is planted by some people who want it as a salad green.
If you are happy with it where it is, call it a plant and don't remove it. Growing fairly large is a bad sign in terms of conventional "weed." So are shallow roots and aggressive spreading. Keep an eye on it.
With a picture, an id is simple. Without one, it is tough.

Hello, i have decided to build a garden pond in my back yard because my comets were getting too big for their tank, so I've already looked up some websites on the matter and i was just wondering aside from the construction, is there anything else i need to consider? What type of plants should i have? I might go away on holiday so will they be okay for a few weeks? Will they eat the plants? How often will I need to change or top up the water? Thanks in advance
