Pennywort pond plant, does it have to be sticking out of the water?

My pond is 2 foot deep. It has no slopes or shelves. I have a pennywort plant and not sure if the leaves have to be out of the water or can it sit at the bottom?

There are dozens of types of pennywort. Some float on the water,some like to be rooted under water,some grow in marshy ground and some grow out of dry stone walls.....it's big problem is that it's so invasive. It'll cover the pond and no light will get underneath,and the oxygen exchange will be pretty bad too. If you're putting fish in the pond you won't see them for pennywort and they'll be gasping for air. You'll need to keep getting rid of it to keep some free water. There are conservation projects all over the country to get rid of the stuff from ponds and streams because it strangles everything else. Are you sure you want it? You could keep it in a pot raised on a pole stuck into the mud at the bottom if there is any,or on a frame,with the top of the pot level with the water or thereabouts. It would stop it spreading so much.

How To Take Care Of Weed Controls

Unfortunately, there's a lot more growing in your lawn than just grass. Controlling weeds in a new or existing lawn is vital to the health and overall appearance of the lawn.

A beautiful smooth lawn gets most of its good looks from the fact that it is smooth and level with no weeds sticking up above the turf. You have probably mowed your lawn before only to have dandelions popping up above the grass a day later making it look like you need to mow already.

A weed free lawn holds its good looks for several days if the grass is a monoculture with uniform growing heights. Weeds are really just one type of plant that we have decided shouldn't be growing in one particular place. It's your point of view as to what makes a weed a weed.

Some weed-type plants are invasive and fast growing. Their growth habit overtakes our cultivated turf plants, depriving them of food and water. Other weeds are extremely noxious and cause problems for humans if they get close them.

In the lawn, the most common weeds are just a nuisance. Most don't cause skin reactions or breathing difficulties, they just don't look good.

What they're also telling us is that the lawn isn't as healthy as it should be. Turf grasses today are so adept at growing into thick masses, that if maintained properly, weeds are not a problem. It is when the lawn isn't as healthy as it could be that we see weeds becoming a problem for the lawn.

Each of these requires a different method in order to control. Experts agree that the best way to control weeds to to prevent them from showing up in the first place. There are certain weed control products on the market right now that can accomplish this.

They are called pre-emergent controls and should ideally be applied in the spring. The soil's surface is covered with a microscopic protective layer that prevents any germinating seeds from taking hold, including crabgrass.

If left undisturbed, this protective layer will maintain its defensive qualities throughout the prime germinating period. This is when most weed seeds will normally start developing. Of course, there is no 100% guarantee that additional seeds won't be carried in by winds, birds, or any number of other methods. Thoroughly read, understand, and follow all information on herbicide labels. Avoid windy days, as these materials can damage many landscape and garden plants if they drift (spray droplets land off the lawn). Also avoid hot days (over 85 degrees F).

It's best to have adequate soil moisture, but no rain for 24 hours after application. Don't mow for a few days before and after application. Consider spot treating weeds rather than broadcasting weed killer over the entire area. Use caution on newly seeded areas; wait four mowings before treating newly seeded lawns and 30 days before seeding areas treated with broadleaf herbicides. Read the label regarding potential tree damage when used on lawns growing over tree root zones.

I need help with my outdoor fish pond?

We built a new outdoor pond a month ago with a pre-formed kit. We bought a lily pad plant that sets on the bottom and we also have a hyacinth that floats on the top. Both plants seem to be doing really well. We also started with 4 comet fish. One disappeared (we suspect the pond overflowed and it floated out), another sank to the bottom, and just today, the last 2 were found floating on the surface. I'm new at this pond thing so I have been searching out the advice of the local pond shop. We had the water tested and found the pH was a little low, so we bought pH Increaser. Then we noticed the pond got so green with algae that we couldn't see the fish, so we bought Algaefix, per the advice of the pond shop. Now I think we overused the algaecide, which killed the fish, and the pond is still green.

The main thing to remember here is stop putting chemicals into the pond. No ph up since every time it rains, it will change the PH. Having a stable ph is better than having to treat the pond every day with a ph up or ph down. Your gold fish will be fine in the ph the pond is now. Your pond will take longer to cycle and yes you need to cycle a pond prior to adding fish.

When the water was tested, what did they tell you your nitrites and ammonia was?

Algae is a sign of a healthy pond. To eliminate too much light you can purchase more water hyacinths. They will quicly take over the surface but that is a good thing. bottom bog plants will help with the oxygen in the pond as well. you are getting algae due to the high nitrates in the water. Is your filter on and running? If you have over used the algaecide, do a partial water change. Also, try just using a pond tinter not an algaecide. Pond tinters (usually blue) will tint the water enough so algae just won't grow. It is harmless to your fish and does not hurt yourhyacinths or lilly's. That way you cannot Overuse to the point of harming your fish.

Are you feeding your fish? If you choose not to feed them, they will eat the algae roots of the hyacinths bugs that are attracted by them. Try feeding them as well with green veggies once or twice a week. Toss in a slice of orange as well and watch them push it around the pond trying to eat it. (Keeps them busy)

How large is your pond? Get yourself a pond test kit.

Also, keep an eye out for neighborhood cats as well as raccoons and birds. These guys too will soon learn there are fish in your pond and will come calling in the evening for afree meal.

Do a water change. It is also a good idea if you have a serious problem with the algae is to use a cleaning pad (you know the fish tank kind on a wooden or metal stick) and wipe down the sides of your pond once per week. This will also help keep algae at bay.

Do a water change, wipe the sides you can reach of the pond add tinting agent not algaecide. Your pond should clear up quickly. Just remember when the algae begins to die back, it could spike your biofilter.
