Is there anything that can be added to Hosta, when planting, to insure the very best plant?

One thing I've found with Hostas is make sure the crown is almost exposed to the elements, don't put very much soil ,or any mulch on the crown.They're very hardy can survive 40 below! They don't get their mature shape for a few years.
